The European Commission unveils its goals for transport by 2050
 In a White Paper published on March 28, 2011, the European Commission sets out its vision for "Transport by 2050". This new document gives details of the Commission's overall strategy and aims to "set up a competitive transport system which favours mobility", as well as reducing the EU's dependency on oil imports and "cutting transport-related carbon emissions by 60% by 2050." Brussels has placed particular emphasis on broadening the scope of the "polluter pays" principle.
